Can a customer book you from Google?

Someone needs their brakes looked at. It is nine in the evening, they are on their phone, and they find your shop on Google. If there is no way to book right there, most of them go back to the results and pick the next one.

Only about one in six auto repair shops can be booked directly from Google.

The other 8,910 shops are asking for a phone call. That works fine at eleven on a Tuesday morning. It works badly at nine in the evening, on a Sunday, or while the person is at work and cannot take a call themselves. Those are exactly the moments when someone is sitting on their phone deciding who to take their car to.

Why this one gap matters more than it looks

A phone number asks the customer to do something at a specific time, in a specific way, and to be comfortable talking to a stranger about a problem they may not know how to describe. A booking button asks them to pick a day.

The gap is not about being modern. It is that the decision is being made right then, on a phone, with three other shops one tap away. A shop that can be booked in that moment gets the job. A shop that cannot is relying on the customer remembering to call tomorrow, and most of them will not.

How we got these numbers

We analyze local businesses and their Google Business Profiles, drawing on directory data, Google's own place data, and search results. This looked at 10,854 profiles for businesses categorized as auto repair, each one confirmed as a match for a real business and currently marked operational, as of August 2026.

A profile counts as bookable if Google lists at least one booking link for it. Booking links come from scheduling software a shop has connected, so this is not a field anyone can simply type in - it means the shop has set up online scheduling and connected it.

An honest limitation: these are the businesses we chose to analyze, not a random sample of the industry. We look for businesses whose online presence appears to need work, so the true booking rate across all auto repair shops is likely higher than what we measured. Read this as a floor, not a national average.
